Electronic Medical Records – Their Importance To The Medical World

When it comes to anything revolving around the medical world one of the things you need to understand is that electronic medical records are the new “It” thing. What most people don’t understand about electronic medical records is why they should accept them as opposed to using files like they have been using for decades. The simple reason is the cost, what you most likely don’t know is that medical centers have to pay for storage of medical files for patients from 7 years ago just because somebody needs to have some file on anybody that has been a patient with them in the past. The reason why this is important to know is because the cost of storage is increasing the cost of medical procedures and doctor visits by roughly 4%. Remember this and add 4% to your years final amount because that is what you will most likely pay next year.

Another reason why electronic medical records are important to the medical world is because every facility needs to have the ability to share medical records quickly and efficiently. Something most people don’t understand is that storing, mailing, fixing, filing, and updating medical folders are a lot or work and simply being able to electronically send a document and update it will be much less expensive and a lot less work. With less than half of the medical community using electronic medical records it is about time that more and more people get used to seeing them in their doctor’s office. The fact of the matter is changing everything over all at once is a very tough thing to do and would take millions if not billions of dollars to do and because of that medical facilities are slowly transferring certain files in order to make the big switch sometime within the next 10 years.
